St Mary’s has launched an exciting new initiative to kickstart choral development here in West Malling.

With the generous support of the Ouseley Church Music Trust, our own Parochial Church Council and the donations of congregation members, we are seeking to appoint an Organ Scholar and four Choral scholars for the academic year 2021-22; one Soprano, one Alto, one Tenor and one Bass.

We have now appointed our Organ Scholar and two of the four Choral Scholars. We are currently still looking for the right candidates for the Alto and Bass scholars.

These are paid positions for which we will audition and interview candidates already in possession of significant musical training. The candidates will be young local people, either in school years 12 & 13 or having recently left school. The scholars will be paid to attend all sung services, offering a strong lead on each of the four voice parts.

The presence of four choral scholars will greatly enhance the musical offerings of the St Mary’s choir, enliven the choir’s dynamic and bring new people into our church community. By extension, this will make the choir much more attractive to local voluntary singers looking to join a choir. The choral scholars will also provide positive role models to the members of Treblemakers (our Junior Choir), giving our younger choristers something to aim at as they mature into their later teenage years.

Information for our congregation

In this 20 minute video, Rev David and Richard Hammond-Hall, our Director of Music, explain the plans and how St Mary’s congregation members can get involved.

While we have reached our target for the fund-raising needed, if you have yet to make a financial contribution to the scheme, please do feel free to do so. Doing so will simply help us to safeguard the longer term future of the scheme and endow the project for the longer term.

If you would like to make a financial contribution to help make this project a reality, cheques should be made payable to “West Malling PCC” and can be delivered to the Vicarage or to the church (when its open). You can make a Bank Transfer using St Mary’s usual details or you can give donate online via JustGiving:  justgiving.com/campaign/stmarysmusicscholars.
