Notices, 2 May 2021

Here are the latest notices and relevant information for the Benefice.

Annual Parochial Meetings – results

Our Annual Parochial Church Meetings took place last week. If you still haven’t caught up with the Annual Reports and the audited Accounts for 2020, they are still available in church and online for you to study.

In Offham, St Michael’s re-elected Stephen Betts and Jane Jordan as Churchwardens. Sarah Marshall, Mike Rowe and Hamish Urquhart were elected for new terms as PCC members. At St Mary’s in West Malling, Clare Innes and John Musker were re-elected as Churchwardens. John Denny and Stephen Crowder were elected to PCC. Clare Trewartha and Jill Rutland stepped down and we thank them for their service over these last few years. Our thanks to all those involved for their willingness to serve our churches and communities in this way.

St Mary’s now has four vacant spots on the PCC. Anyone who would be interested in joining PCC, and being part of key decisions for the future of our church, should speak to Rev David.

Choral and organ scholars fund at St Mary’s

At St Mary’s, Rev David and our Director of Music, Richard Hammond-Hall, have launched a new scheme for Choir and Organ Scholars who we hope to recruit later this year. Right now, we are hoping that the St Mary’s congregation would like to be part of our fundraising for the project. Fund-raising is going well with over £3,400 raised but we’re not yet at our target and would encourage anyone from St Mary’s who has not yet donated to consider doing so.

You can find out more about the scheme on our website and watch a video which David and Richard have recorded to tell you all about our plans!

Christian Aid fund-raising

Due to safety restrictions in the Pandemic, we are unable to run our street collections on West Malling High Street this year to raise money for Christian Aid.

However, Deb and Jill from St Mary’s are not to be defeated and have decided to walk 300,000 steps (each!) during May to raise money for this important charity and one of our key mission partners. For over 70 years, Christian Aid has been standing with the poorest of our neighbours. They work in 37 countries, with people of all faiths and none, to stand up for dignity, equality and justice.

You can sponsor Deb and Jill online by following this link to the JustGiving website.

Volunteer Networks in West Malling and Offham

St Mary’s in West Malling and St Michael’s in Offham are working with the respective Parish Councils, local clubs, other churches, community groups, societies and agencies to provide a network of volunteers who want to help, and link them with people who need help during the Coronavirus pandemic.

In both communities, the networks are actively serving those who have to shield and stay at home during this current lockdown. To sign-up to help as a volunteer or to ask for help from the Network, please click the respective button below to find out more about the West Malling Volunteers if you live in West Malling. Or, if you live in Offham, click the button to sign-up to the Offham Community Network.

School Governance opportunity

Our friends at St John’s, Wateringbury have asked us to advertise that there is a vacancy for a Foundation Governor at Wateringbury CE Primary School. To find out more, please contact Rev Gary Townsend or the Clerk of Governors by emailing governors@wateringbury.kent.sch.uk.

David’s day off

Rev David’s day off this week will be Saturday the 8th of May.

During the last year, David often took his rest day on Saturdays as the most sensible way to use his time. With Weddings and other Saturday duties now really starting to take off again, he will be going back to his pre-Coronavirus pattern and most commonly taking Fridays as his rest day going forward even if this week it happens to be a Saturday.
