Online Worship: 10th January 2021, Baptism of Christ

This Sunday is the 10th of January 2020,
the Baptism of Christ

Grace, mercy and peace
from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ
be with you.

Welcome to our Online Worship for this week. Having marked the feast of Epiphany on Wednesday, we are now into the season of Epiphany. This season takes us to various stories and encounters where individuals or groups suddenly see or understand truly and put their faith in Jesus. They have their own ‘epiphany’.

The first of these stories involves Jesus’ baptism at the very start of his adult ministry. Rev David reflects on the story and how it can challenge and inspire us today. Our thanks also to Naomi for providing the Bible reading for us today.

The statistics and data for the nation are not good at the moment. We are still in Tier 4 and it’s important to be especially vigilant in halting the spread of Coronavirus. As always, if you need some extra help or want to talk, please don’t hesitate to be in touch so that we can support one another.

There are a number of things to be aware of at the moment. This page will tell you more.

Songs to sing today

O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness

Be still for the presence of the Lord

All-Age song: Peace like a river

David’s video sermon for this Sunday

Prayers for today

Prayers of Intercession
for Epiphany

Jesus calls us out of darkness into his marvellous light.
Washed clean by the waters of baptism,
let us pray that we may live the life to which he has called us.

Lord Jesus, eternal Word,
proclaimed as the Christ by John the forerunner,
hear us as we pray for all who proclaim your word …
Lord of truth,
hear our prayer.

Lord Jesus, baptizing with the Spirit and with fire,
strengthen us to withstand all the trials of our faith …
Lord of truth,
hear our prayer.

Lord Jesus, bringing forgiveness to all who repent,
teach your Church dependence on your grace …
Lord of truth,
hear our prayer.

Lord Jesus, fulfilment of the promises of old,
give hope to all who suffer or are ignored …
Lord of truth,
hear our prayer.

Lord Jesus, beloved Son of the Father,
anoint us with the gifts of your Holy Spirit …
Lord of truth,
hear our prayer.

Lord Jesus, bringer of hope,
share with all the faithful the riches of eternal life …
Lord of truth,
hear our prayer.

Lord Jesus Christ,
in you the Father makes us and all things new.
Transform the poverty of our nature
by the riches of your grace,
and in the renewal of our lives
make known your heavenly glory.

A prayer about the COVID-19 pandemic

God of compassion,
have mercy upon this nation and our world
in this time of fear and confusion:
we bring before you those who are suffering from the Coronavirus;
the aged and those who are most vulnerable
and for all who tend to their needs;
we pray for those who are now in isolation;
may know your comfort and company
and that those around them may truly love their neighbour
by prayer and in works of care and kindness;
we pray for health professionals, doctors, nurses and hospital support staff
as they answer their vocation under increasing pressure;
and we pray for those upon whose shoulders
the yoke of leadership rests,
that in their conversation and communication
your still small voice may be heard;
we ask this in the power of the Holy Spirit,
through the One who stretched out his hands to bless and to heal
even Jesus Christ our Lord.

The Collect for this Sunday

Heavenly Father,
at the Jordan you revealed Jesus as your Son:
may we recognize him as our Lord
and know ourselves to be your beloved children;
through Jesus Christ our Saviour.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours
now and for ever.

May God,
who in Christ gives us a spring of water welling up to eternal life,
perfect in you the image of his glory;
and may the blessing of God almighty,
the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,
be among you and remain with you always.

Be at peace. Love and serve the Lord.
In the name of Christ. Amen.
